I have been photographing since I was about 7 years old. I have always liked taking pictures of people; the challenge of watching eyes, being patient, going on instinct.

Nothing is ever the same two days in a row for a photographer, a fact for which I am eternally grateful. My assignments have given me the chance to meet people and see how they work and play. I get to spread my life around the world.

I used to think that photos needed to tell stories. Now I think it is enough to plant seeds. Not everything has to be revealed; a moment captured leaves a lot to the imagination.

When I was 19 years old I spent three months photographing in the Dominican Republic for a book about baseball in that country. The title is "Sugarball: The American Game, the Dominican Dream." It's available at amazon.com.

I began my career in photojournalism after graduating from college in 1991. My work has appeared in The New York Times and the USA Today, among other publications.

I have photographed a coup in Haiti and heart surgery in the jungles of Brazil. My assignments have put me in front of Warren Buffett, Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, and Dave Matthews.

At the end of the day I look through my photos to see what I have captured. I like the surprises.
